The late Mississippi Artist, Columnist and Poet Gertrude McCarty Smith (1923-2007) was both an enigma and multi-faceted human kaleidoscope – a recurring theme in her art and writings. Though she appeared as a soft spoken demure Southern belle, Gertrude was a prolific creative trailblazer who garnered nearly three lifetime achievement honors, 100 awards, 400 press stories including Southern Living Magazine and their cable TV show, and collectors coast to coast and in Europe. The just released retrospective book, “Worlds Beyond My Window”, celebrates her career which spanned more than 70 years. Also an arts foundation named in her honor has been formed to bring access and passion for literature, performance and visual arts to children in under-served communities throughout Mississippi. All net proceeds from the wearable art, book, cards and original artworks benefit the Gertrude McCarty Smith Foundation for the Arts.
