Jane Appleby is an expressive painter, inspired by the Canadian landscape, often painting outdoors in the plein air tradition of the Canadian Group of Seven. Her abstract and impressionistic work has been described as ‘Emily Carr meets Gauguin’, both spiritual in nature and colourfully unique. Jane has been mentored by many artists including the late Robert & Sara Genn, and is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, winning several awards in their juried exhibitions. She has a Biology Degree from Simon Fraser University and completed a Fine Art’s Technique Certificate at Emily Carr University. Jane currently resides in Burnaby, British Columbia with her husband, children, a dog and two cats. She enjoys quality time in nature as much as possible, including mountain hikes, kayaking, and skiing. She hopes to inspire people with her artwork and encourage the artist in all of us. Artist's Statement I am constantly looking for new ways to represent the joy of experiencing the landscape. I am inspired by the drama of light which presents vibrant colours and rhythmns, as it moves along forms. My dynamic compositions are a contemplative and heartfelt response to my experiences, representing the “visual music” I feel. Each brushstroke is like a colour note or chord playing out the scene offering a connection with the viewer through dynamic movement and exciting colour.
